Heat exhaustion

Dehydration occurs, electrolytes are lost, sweating, diarrhoea, cramps can start in the legs and belly, a flushed face appearance can occur, severe dehydration causes a ‘sunken eyed’ appearance.

A ‘pinch test’ for dehydration, if skin does not return within 2 seconds, normally a bad sign.

Recognition

Stomach cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting and increased pulse.

Altered level of consciousness and coma may develop.

Hot dry skin, flushed appearance, fast pulse, Increased breathing rate.

Seizures in later stage. A dusting of salt can appear on dry flushed skin.

Management

Aggressive cooling. Ice, wet clothing to neck, armpits, groin, lie down, legs up. Spray with water and fan. Monitor vital signs.

Seek prompt medical attention.
